Piano & Keyboard Lessons

Interviews

Any parent looking for a piano teacher, before signing up should learn about what's involved and feel comfortable with the teacher's teaching philosophy and policies.  The student interview is a vital process.  It gives the prospective student (and/or parent) and the teacher the opportunity to gather information needed to make a final decision on where to study.  This meeting occurs after first contact (phone/email) with the teacher has been made.

Purpose of the Interview.

During the interview, the student (and parent) can learn more about the teacher's teaching philosophies and policies.  The teacher can use this meeting to assess the student, the family and determine compatibility.  Determining compatibility is a critical part of the meeting.  It's a case of determining whether the student's communication and learning style is well-matched to the teacher's communication and teaching style, determining how well the student's (or parents) vision meshes with the teacher's and how well all parties "click" with each other.

Preparing for the Interview:

A beginner student should think about why he/she is interested in taking piano lessons.  An adult learner should have specific and overall goals written down to share with the teacher.  A transfer student should have a couple of pieces prepared to play. Parents of transfer students should bring a copy of their child(s) previous exam transcripts, music books and assignment book along with a list of questions to ask the teacher.

What Happens at the Interview:

The interview usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.  The meeting is broken down into three components:
  • Teacher Interview: questions the teacher will have for the student and parent.
  • Assessment: listen to the student perform, assess technical skills, perform reading, rhythm and aural exercises.
  • Philosophies and Final Questions: teacher provides outline of studio policies, expectations, tuition fees, calendar and parents can ask final questions.
After the interview, everyone should reflect and review the information they received.  The final process is to complete the student registration and information forms and to schedule a lesson time slot.  Please feel free to contact the teacher with any questions regarding your upcoming interview.
